Last night on FFXI, Aslann, Sephi, and I did the "Petrifying Pair" level 30 BCNM at the Ghelsba Outpost.

BCNMs are a sort of controlled fight where you trade a type of orb (in this case, a Sky Orb) to a target (usually in a dungeon area). To get the orb, you need to go to a NPC in Port Jeuno and trade in beastman seals that you've collected while you were killing monsters. These seals cannot be traded to any other player, so you either keep them or dump them. The amount of beastman seals you trade to the NPC depends on the level cap of the BCNM fight. So, for the "Petrifying Pair" fight, you trade 30 beastman seals to get the Sky Orb. Each player can hold one orb, so all three of us got orbs for this fight. If you want a more detailed explanation, the FFXI section for somepage.com has a great summary: FFXI Burning Circle Notorious Monster (BCNM) Guide.

Anyway, the reason why we went to do this was because I wanted to get a pair of leaping boots. Well, since I was going as a ranger subbing ninja, I was borrowing Aslann's emperor's hairpin and his leaping boots, so technically any boots that dropped would go to him and I'd just keep "his" boots. The boots are "rare", so a player can only have one of them If anyone tries to keep two, one of them will be automatically dropped from his inventory. Since the boots are worth around 800k in gil... Um, that's a really expensive item to lose. XD (Well, for me, anyway. 800k is still a lot for me.)

Keep in mind that almost all the gear I wear when exping as a ranger is Aslann's... not mine. I think the only gear that's mine is the bow, crossbows, ammo, any ninja crack (ninjutsu tools), mercenary captain's belt (I think it's mine?), and my ranger's necklace (which was quested). Earrings, rings, noct gear, hairpin, and boots are all Aslann's. Oh, I have a Tomahawk axe, but I didn't use it for this fight. XD

Anyway, this was our party setup:
- Aslann: paladin subbing warrior.
- Asiren (me): ranger subbing ninja.
- Sephi: red mage subbing ninja.

List of supplies (rough list of what we actually had):
Aslann - paladin/warrior:
  • Hi-Potions x 9 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Blinding Potions x 6 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Eye drops x 2

  • Echo drops x 6 - To prevent being silenced by the lizards' "Blockhead" move.

  • Tavnazian Taco x 3

  • Yagudo Drink x 6 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Panama au Lait x 3

  • Sky Orb

Asiren - ranger/ninja:
  • Hi-Potions x 3 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Blinding Potions x 6 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Eye drops x 6

  • Echo drops x 4

  • Sushi x 3 - I had two pieces of leftover squid sushi, so I just bought another stack of squid sushi to cover me. So more like sushi x 14

  • Pear au Lait x 3

  • Shihei - For casting Utsusemi: Ichi (ninjutsu equivalent of Blink/shadows). I had a stack (99) plus 30 leftover from the last experience party I was on.
  • Sky Orb

  • Holy Bolts - 2 full stacks (1 stack = 99 bolts) and 1 partially used stack

  • Acid Bolts - 1 full stack and 1 partially used stack

  • Blind Bolts - 1 full stack and 1 partially used stack

  • Venom Bolts - 1 full stack and 1 partially used stack

  • Silver Arrows - 1 partially used stack; this was backup ammo

  • Shinobi-tabi - For casting Tonko: Ichi (ninjutsu equivalent of the spell Invisible). Partially used stack.

  • Silent Oils - Not used during the fight at all; just there for emergencies. ;P

  • Probably a few other stuff that I don't remember... I was around 43 out of 60 for my personal inventory.

Sephi - red mage/ninja:
  • Hi-Potions x 3 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Blinding Potions x 6 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Eye drops x 2

  • Echo drops x 6

  • Rolanberry Pie x 3

  • Yagudo Drink x 6 (macro-ed for easy use)

  • Panama au Lait x 3

  • Shihei

  • Sky Orb

We did not use all our supplies. We completed the first run in around 7 minutes and 56 seconds (more or less), the second run was around 7 minutes and 30 seconds, and our third run was around 5 minutes and 45 seconds. I only had to use two sushi (renewed my food effect in mid-battle on the third run), maybe 2-5 shihei, 2 pear au laits, 1 blinding potion, and 1 eye drop. I did get hit once physically and again when one of the lizards did Fireball on us, but for the most part, I was in no danger of dying. (The same cannot be said for Aslann; there were times when I was just spamming bolts so I could grab hate so he could heal himself.)

Also, some of our supplies, (specifically the alchemy-made ones) were crafted by Aslann. I got him crying mustard and 2 stacks of water crystals for him to use. (BTW, don't pay me back, they're on me. ;P ) Those were used to make Hi-Potions, Blinding Potions, Echo drops and (maybe?) eye drops.

This was our original strategy:
At the Ghelsba Hut, everyone eat their appropriate food (tacos, sushi, pie) and rest to full. One person uses their orb and enter the hut.

Once inside (and the level cap is applied), the red mage and the paladin cast Protect II on themselves and the ranger. Everyone rests up to full HP/MP. Ranger casts Utsusemi: Ichi on herself.

Everyone drinks blinding potions (to prevent petrify from the two lizards - think back to the Greek/Roman myth of Medusa). Paladin and red mage drinks panama au lait (HP regen even when standing). Red mage drinks a yagudo drink (MP regen even when standing). Red mage casts Utsusemi: Ichi on herself.

Red mage casts Bind on the white lizard (Kalamainu) and beings to kite the monster around (basically keep the monster busy while not getting yourself killed in the process).

Paladin provokes the brown lizard (Kilioa). Red mage casts Gravity on the white lizard.

The paladin and ranger fight the brown lizard. The skillchain between the paladin and the ranger is Split Shot > Fast Blade for Distortion. (We never really skillchained because the paladin usually didn't have TP or was too busy keeping himself alive, and I usually had more than enough TP. I ended up soloing my Split Shots.)

Paladin drinks a yagudo drink. Ranger uses Blind and Acid bolts for enfeebling the monster and then switch to Holy Bolts. (Occasionally I used Venom bolts, but they're not as effective since Lizards have a poison-based attack themselves, so they have some resistance to poison.) If ranger has trouble hitting the monster with the blinding potion on, use an eye drop to cure it.

Red mage cast paraylze and slow on the brown lizard. By this time the white lizard should be unbound, and the red mage should try to kite it with Bind, Gravity, and Utsusemi: Ichi.

If the red mage is in danger at any time, she should kite the mob towards the paladin and ranger and use her "Help me out!" macro. The paladin will Cure II the red mage, and the ranger will change her target to the white lizard to get hate (the monster's attention). Once the ranger gets hate, switch back to the brown lizard. The red mage should reapply Bind and Gravity on the white lizard at this time.

Kill the brown lizard as soon as possible. Then kill the white lizard.

Notes:
Ranger should use her HP regen drink (pear au lait) after she gets damaged to save Hi-Potions.

Red mage should get as much +INT gear as possible to help her Bind and Gravity spells stick.

What we found out:
Being blind does not prevent petrify from the lizards. Furthermore, I missed every shot I fired when I was blind (only 3-5 shots, but that's enough to make me impatient with all the +ranged accuracy gear I was wearing and the food effect). So, we ended up dumping the "blinding" part of the strategy. (Hence why I put a strike through.)

We did get petrified, however, we were able to wait it through since there was usually at least one person who was NOT petrified. BTW, shadows does not prevent the petrified status either (sad to say). There were a few moments when the paladin was petrified and I got hate so he wouldn't get hit as much. These lizards hit faster than normal lizards (at least 2 times faster?), so I wasn't quite prepared on the timing my re-casting correctly for Utsusemi: Ichi on the first run. Still after the lizard hit me once, it missed me two other times, allowing me to recast my shadows. ;P

If it hit more than once, I really did forget about those hits. XD

We got really lucky on our first run with Aslann's Sky Orb; a pair of leaping boots dropped. Rough lists of drops for each person's orb:

Drops that Aslann got from his orb:
- Leaping Boots
- Lizard Skin x 1
- Absorb-INT
- Elm log
- Pick belt

Drops I got from my orb:
- Rapier Belt
- Scroll of Erase
- Lizard Skin
- Lapis Lazuli

Drops that Sephi got from her orb (nothing good, though =/ ):
- iron ingot
- One of the Absorb scrolls
- two other things I really can't remember

A really thorough listing of all items that can drop from this BCNM can be found at the FFXI section of somepage.com: BCNM 30: Petrifying Pair

All in all, we did ok. We might do this again tonight using our Aslann's strategy. [livejournal.com profile] aslan294 was the one who came up with this strategy and the supply lists by looking at another strategy posted on Allakhazam. So the real leader is Aslann; I'm just typing this up for memory's sake. XD

Lol, over-prepared is so much better than being under-prepared. At least we won all three times. =)

Lol, I should really congratulate you on the boots since they were dropped from your orb. XD

When ever a liz or any other mob is about to petrify you. Just turn around and it won't stick. It's been proven time and time again :3

Where has this been proven? Actually, where is this kind of information posted? I've never heard of it. o_O
